August 2009 Best Albums

Of the albums which arrived at WRPI in August 2009, my favorites were:
  • The Weaver's Bonny by Atwater-Donnelly
On the back of the CD case, it says that on this album, Atwater-Donnelly has outdone themselves. I think I agree. I think that I like it better than some of their previous albums because it does more with instruments.
  • The Longing by Smithfield Fair
  • The Shantyman by Hank Cramer. Rousing sailor songs.
Runners-up were:
  • Miner's Songs - Bygone Times and Places by Hank Cramer
Songs about miners. Hank Cramer has a nice deep voice.
  • Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House by the Wailin' Jennies.
  • My Dusty Road by Woody Guthrie.
  • Blood and Candle Smoke by Tom Russell
  • Disfarmer by Bill Frisell
  • Oasis World, Volume IX, #1, Oasis World, Volume IX, #2
They sent us numbers 1, 2, and 3. For some reason, I liked many songs on 1 and 2, but few on 3. Many of the tracks I liked on 1 and 2 were instrumentals. Although these are billed as albums of world music, I found that a lot of it would fit better on a folk show than on a world show.
