Mostly Folk Playlist April 14, 2013
Host: Terry Hayden
The Vientos del Pueblo show is usually on before Mostly Folk, but this week it was pre-empted by baseball. Baseball ended before 6:00, and during that time, I played three songs from Guardabarranco, which is a group sometimes played on Vientos del Pueblo. The songs I played were:

Wanting Memories
Wanting Memories is an interesting song. I heard it on the NPR web site about two months ago performed by Cantus, but it has also been performed by Sweet Honey in the Rock, and I think I must have heard them do it, because the song seemed familiar. The lyrics can be found at http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/k/kealii_reichel/wanting_memories.html. Often when I'm having difficulty with life, I enjoy songs like this, which are about being in darkness and seeking light.
Here's a snippet of the lyrics:
I think on the things that made me feel so wonderful when i was young.
I think on the things that made me laugh, made me dance, made me sing.
I think on the things that made me grow into a being full of pride.
I think on these things, for they are true.
I am sitting here wanting memories to teach me,
To see the beauty in the world through my own eyes.
I thought that you were gone, but now I know you're with me
The performance by Cantus is at http://www.npr.org/event/music/170856332/cantus-tiny-desk-concert. In this video, Cantus does three very different songs. It's cool.
